G: Why are you so OK with autism?
El: It is me.
zzzizIt is mood swing that worries me.
G: Tell me more.
El: I don’t know the reason.
G: Why do you like us to read to you so much?
El: It is calming.
G: Do you like the information? the stories?
El: Yes.
G: What is calming about it?
El: I can just hear.
G: What did you think of our run last evening?
El: Hot and hot.
G: Am I too slow to run with?
El: Little.
I think it is good to be slow sometimes.
G: How was surf camp? reading with Erin?
El: It was magic.
G: What was magic about it?
El: It was two weeks of my life with sun and sea.

Elliot loves to play with words. Much of his verbal language is word play. Here is an example of word play with Soma:
E: It is in Wisconsin.
zzziiIt is sin.
G: What does that mean? it is sin?
E: It rhymes.
E: Texas can be taxes.
a
Conversation continues:
Soma: I like the word Texas… stylish… cowboys…
E: I don’t see cowboys here.
I think I can’t stand animal smell.
Is it healthy to smell animal?

A short story
It was a small town.
The weather was fine.
The streets were not yet busy
because it was too early for people to go to work.
A young boy with his dog
was jogging around.
He had to run because his habit was running.
Running made him look normal.
Running made him forget that
there was anything wrong
with him.
He wanted to be the best runner
in the world.
The dog was a good company.
The boy looked at nothing but
his feet.
He ran faster and faster.
And, finally stopped at a
post office.
He liked post offices.

A short story
Loneliness accompanied me
while I sat
under a tree.
My dog who was my best friend
died last winter.
We used to run together and,
now it is too quiet.
A man approached me
and sat next to me.
He did not talk like me.
He did not ask me why I felt
bad.
We sat there for a long time.
When I got up, he got up too.
He began to follow me home.
I began to run; he did it too.
He was barking “woof, woof.”

G: Sami is going to college next year. You could go for a semester somewhere or just keep doing what we’re doing – taking frequent trips. Which would you like?
El: I have to think about it. I have to see how I can have most fun.
El: Trips are fun.
zzzziI hope life is a trip.
